In her book, Chasing the Dragon, Jackie Pullinger tells of being called by God to Hong Kong to work amongst the prostitutes and drug addicts living in the notorious walled city. Though fearful for her own safety, daily she would try to make contact with people who lived in some of the worst conditions one could imagine. But after six months little had been achieved and despair set in.She agonized about it for days. "If God has called me to be here why aren't people responding?" One morning she realized what was wrong. She'd been telling people that God loves them and that Jesus loves them and wants to forgive them but she'd not been loving them in any practical way. She needed to go and be as Jesus, with them. The next three months she spent, "soaking herself in scripture and prayer - and being drenched by the Holy Spirit!"Her new and very practical approach yielded a remarkable response. Providing food, shelter and healthcare, visiting prisons, speaking up for victims, these became the ingredients of her everyday life. The situation was so transformed that even the drug barons watched out for her safety. She's still there and so is the church that grew from her work but the Walled City isn't. It was demolished ten years ago.(Source: Online Sermons) |
Report on the Meetings with Jackie Pullinger-ToFrom the 19th to the 22 of March, 1998, we were blessed to have Jackie Pullinger-To and her team minister to us at 4th (Presbyterian) Church. Her team included both volunteer workers from Hong Kong and overseas, as well as a few who were in the drug rehab program at St. Stephen's (the ministry she and her co-workers have started). They all were on the ministry team, laying hands on the rest of us, as well as giving some word or tongue as the Holy Spirit gave the prompting. Continue reading |

Watchman Nee: articles |
Christ the Wisdom and Power of God
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing,
but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written:
"I will destroy the wisdom of the wise;
the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate."
Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of
this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in
the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was
pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who
believe. Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we
preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to
Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ
the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is
wiser than man's wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man's
strength.
Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you
were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of
noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the
wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose
the lowly things of this world and the despised things -- and the things
that are not -- to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast
before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has
become for us wisdom from God--that is, our righteousness, holiness and
redemption. Therefore, as it is written: "Let him who boasts boast in the
Lord."

She agonized about it for days. “If God has called me to be here why aren’t people responding?” One morning she realized what was wrong. She’d been telling people that God loves them and that Jesus loves them and wants to forgive them but she’d not been loving them in any practical way. She needed to go and be as Jesus, with them. The next three months she spent, “soaking herself in scripture and prayer - and being drenched by the Holy Spirit!”
Her new and very practical approach yielded a remarkable response. Providing food, shelter and healthcare, visiting prisons, speaking up for victims, these became the ingredients of her everyday life. The situation was so transformed that even the drug barons watched out for her safety. She’s still there and so is the church that grew from her work but the Walled City isn’t. It was demolished ten years ago.

Lee Fai was very much put out by the strangers who began to invade his patch under the Kowloon City flyover every week. He did not mind the food we gave out.. If we wanted to give away rice and meat, who was he to refuse, especially since he had not eaten such clean, fresh rice in a long while, or such tender meat.
But he could not see much when it came down to it. His eyes were usually blurred by drink, and his voice sounded like it came from someone else when he shouted it us. His annoyance was rekindled: we had no business being there. Why did we not leave them all in peace?
His friends under the flyover were not all of the same opinion. One of the other street sleepers was especially pleased, he had such pain in his hands from arthritis and we said Jesus could heal them. He had never known the peace he felt when he prayed himself, and he watched with amazement and gratitude as the selling went down in his hands over the succeeding weeks. When he saw this, Lee Fai only jeered all the more.
Now and again, people would say (concerning her ministry in Hong Kong), "Isn't is WONDERFUL that God would choose a woman to go?", and I would say, "No, it's not wonderful; excuse me for being rude about God, but He can pick who He likes." I mean it's no more wonderful for Him to send a woman than a man or an old man or young woman. He picks who He wants. That's His business. "It was God's wisdom that sent me." I was just doing what He made me for. That's no credit to me; it’s all credit to him. If He's made you for something, you just do it."
Jesus is the universal solution. If you have a behaviour that you can't stop, or know someone who's addicted in some way, Jesus says in John 4:16 'I am the Way, and the Truth and the Life'. But we need to find, for every single life, the key to the way into that life. And it's not the same key for every person!
Poor
“People say to me. 'What about the rich?' They need Jesus too.' Well, that's
fine if you're called to them, but we're called to the poor. The rich can look
after themselves.”
Love
“I went up to a man and said 'Jesus loves you' …but I realised that it didn't
mean anything unless I did it.”
Jesus
“Jesus is everything. If it weren't for him, I'd have no goodness at all.”
